Understanding by Design

I've read two chapters from the book Understanding by Design by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe.  Now I wonder, am I guilty of committing a "twin sin"; am I too activity or coverage focused?  From what I read, it sounds like this is what I need to do for each of my weekly themes in 4k.  I have my set skills, favorite activities, ongoing assessments, and early learning standards.  However, I feel that I'm missing the "big picture" or point of it all.  Would this design help me get organized within my themes and create a justified link of why I do what I do?
